Biochar
Biochar is a charcoal-like material made from the pyrolysis of biomass from agricultural and forestry residues (e.g., corn stalks, hulls, wood chips, manure, etc.,) and charred at high temperatures, ranging from 350°C to 800°C with limited oxygen. When biomass undergoes pyrolysis, the carbon becomes a stable form that allows it to retain carbon for hundreds of years when sequestered into the soil.
The benefits of biochar are:
- Improves Nutrient Retention
- Improved Drought Resistance
- Sequesters Carbon in the Soil
- Reduces CO2 in the air
- Pest and Disease Control
- Reduction in Synthetic Fertilizers
